Natural remedies that can help you get rid of mosquitoes at home


There are essential oils with unpleasant smell for these insects such as cedar wood, lavender, lemon, patchouli, neem oil, mint, rosemary, basil, thyme, lemon grass, mint, the tea, geranium, catnip, eucalyptus
These oils, combined in any way, based on availability and your tastes, can help you create effective mosquito spray.

Here is a recipe for preparing a very useful repellent:

You will need just a few ingredients:

  • 1 vial of one or more essential oils (including those listed to create a mix or a unique aroma)
  • witch hazel
  • distilled water or boiled
  • vegetable glycerine (optional)


Fill the spray bottle with half of distilled water and add the water of witch hazel to ½ finger from the brink. Add ½ teaspoon of vegetable glycerin (herbal medicine) and 30-50 drops of essential oils selected. Shake and copiously applied to the skin.

Natural remedies against mosquitoes: the anti-mosquito plants

There are different and readily available plants suitable to keep away these little unwanted guests from our homes, perfect for embellishing with a touch of colorful flowers our balconies and window sills.

1. Good natural remedies against mosquitoes are geraniums, whose odor, neutral or pleasant for us, seems to be unbearable for the ‘nose’ of these annoying insects.

2. Equally effective is the catambra, anti-mosquito plant par excellence, which can be grown both on the ground and in pots. Its smell is imperceptible for us, but not for the mosquitoes that hate him, thanks to the substance called catalpolo. In order to be effective in the garden you have to plant it on every three meters, on the balcony on every two, in the house in every room.

3. Then there is the well known lemongrass, a plant that has a bushy shape and a pleasant citrus odor. You can grow it on the ground or in pots, and its leaves will keep mosquitoes away precisely thanks to the lemony smell they produce.

4. A bit ‘more difficult to grow but equally effective is the eucalyptus, although difficult to cultivate.

If we organize our balcony with plants with strong biodiversity and characteristics that unwelcome mosquitoes, we can get rid of mosquitoes without using pesticides and enjoy the summer evenings at the terrace. The “anti-mosquito balcony “needs plants that attract predators of mosquitoes as dragonflies, bats, insectivorous birds, lizards, geckos, ants, spiders. That’s why is important to select varieties that attract these insects, such as citronella, catnip, rosemary, peppermint, marigold, lemon balm, garlic, basil and lavender.

Natural remedies against mosquitoes in the garden and outdoor

If you want to take a walk in the countryside or in the forest, to chase away the mosquitoes just rub on your skin a vanilla bean. This method also works with the leaves of artemisia, bergamot, sage, even absinthe, comptonia and leaves of pineapple. The effect will last for an hour and then it should be reapplied.

Other practical and environmental friendly natural solution that will stop the larvae development is to use a product containing Bacillus thurungiensis israelensis. Natural remedies for tiger mosquitoes

There is a simple homeopathic solution that can help you get rid of mosquitoes away, the ledum marsh plant (also called wild rosemary) with anti-mosquito properties. Oral intake of these homeopathic granules should change the smell of our sweat, making it unpleasant only for mosquitoes. People do not perceive it. You should take the tablets 3/4 times a day and let them dissolve under your tongue. It takes a few days to see the effects.

Aggressive and potential disease transmitter, the mosquito often rages with children, which identifies easily because of their high metabolism and the great movement they do. It is very important to use natural and non-allergenic spray on all uncovered skin of the children.

The last choice of natural remedies against mosquitoes, almost neutral for the environment (actually produce a minimum amount of CO2) are the  mosquito traps, which use different methods (light, heat) to lure and neutralize them with a fan or other systems. We should also mention that these are not 100% natural systems for the reasons described above, but they have a limited environmental impact, unlike the solutions of chemical type.

    As for me, the best traps are CO2 traps, like here They are works better than naturals. But it’s more expensive and more harmful for the health.
